Blu-Ray Discs – The Future is Here
One of the first things you would hear about Blu ray DVDs is that they are optical storage formats. Probably, here is something you could correlate with standard DVDs. And for you, the similarities between them really end here. Talk about Blu ray DVDs and you will find that they are used for high-end purposes, which a standard DVD could be redundant on.
Forgot to say this – There is one more similarity between the Blu ray DVD and a standard DVD. That is their physical appearance, as by the looks of it, you may not be able to differentiate between the both.
Blu-ray DVDs get their name from the use of Blue-violet laser, as opposed to the use of red laser in quite a few other DVDs.
A single layer Blu-Ray DVD has a capacity of 25 GB, while a double layer Blu-ray DVD works up sizes of 50GB. In the future, 1 TB Blu-Ray DVDs are planned for the public. One thing is for sure thus – With Blu Ray DVDs, you will never have to complain about storage at all, as these DVDs will have enough in them to store almost everything.
Technical specifications of the Blu ray DVD
Blue laser of wavelength 405 nm is used in Blu ray DVD, and that’s probably why these discs are known as Blu ray DVD. Most importantly, blue laser, which is of shorter wavelength, allows the Blu Ray DVD to store more information than the conventional CDs and DVDs.
Blu-ray versus HD-DVD
Though, the physical specifications of a Blu-Ray disc were finalized in 2004, it was not until mid-2006 that the Blu-ray discs could be shipped out. This was due to multiple delays – First on count of AACS standard delay and second, on count of a concern pointed out by one of the members of the Blu-Ray group. These delays ensured that Blu-ray discs arrived in the market couple of months after HD-DVDs came into the picture.
Blu-ray versus HD-DVD – The competition intensifies
Of course, HD-DVD came into the market much before Blu-Ray did, and in the process, captured a lot of the market share, which was looking for a high definition format to come into the scene. Blu-Ray in its initial days was termed as expensive by people, who wasted absolutely no time in comparing this with HD-DVD.
But all that took a complete change with the launch of Playstation 3. This event brought out Blu-Ray DVDs on tops, and since then, they have just been leading this domain.
With a variety of options Blu-Ray DVD offers, in terms of Single and Double Layer discs, you have a huge range of options in terms of storage. But Blu-Ray discs are known for another aspect – That is their speed.
Bottom-line, with Blu-Ray DVDs you can take high definition burning to a new level. The competition between HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs is on, in full force, but Blu-Ray discs seem to surge ahead with their features.
