Blu-ray drives have almost replaced all the DVDs and are finding their future in the coming generations. Knowing about their history of their marketing strategies would be something interesting and help them analyzing their future surveillance in the future as a commercial product.

These blu-ray discs have faced a good competition and struggled to be a part of the commercial market. This is only because of the expensive ‘laser blue-violet diode’ used in them. Though expensive they over leaped the other formats and now are the extensively used discs all around the world.

These blu-ray discs are the optical storage media which superseded the DVDs due to their huge storage capacity that is 10 times more than the normal DVDs. They are available both in single layered and double layered which can store 25GB and 50GB respectively. The store very high definition data and can be used with maximum resolution, Sony playstation3 games also comes under this type of data, which can be processed on these discs very easily.

Their physical appearance is same as that of the normal DVDs and their names comes from the laser light used for reading and writing purposes; it’s the ‘blue-violet light’. This blue-violet light is of the shorter wavelength then the red light used to read and write regular DVDs. It has a wavelength of 405nm where as it is 650nm or more used for regular DVD media.

At the beginning there was a format war between the HD DVD and the blu-ray discs. Toshiba, the electronics company was behind the war and promoted the HD DVDs. But the blu-ray discs were far more advantageous than the HD DVDs. Due to the drawbacks of the HD DVDs Toshiba has come down and the war ended in 2008 and then onwards it started to manufacture their own blu-ray discs. There were also many issues regarding the commercializing of this blu-ray technology due to their cost.

The Sony BDZ S77 was the first blu-ray disc burner which was available in the market and it was $4000(us)! There were no movies for the player too. The physical specifications and other standard factors came into existence only in the year 2004.

Sony pioneer, Toshiba, Samsung then started to work on this blu-ray technology. The BD ROM was introduced in the year 2006. The blu-ray discs have faced competition with the HD DVD ROMs players which were introduced 6 months earlier to this blu-ray innovation. The 50GB discs were available in the market from 2006 only.

The first blu-ray disc drive which grabbed all the attention was the BWU-100 A from Sony which supported both single layered and double layered disc and also the BD-RE discs and them after 9.6 million devices were sold in the year 2008!. These were also called as the next generation storage media. Today many companies are trying to produce discs with more storage data capacity which can range up to 100GB!

So all these are the factors that help analyze the future of these blu-ray discs and the vast amount of data they are about to provide on one single disc. So be ready to dump all the huge number of DVDs you have and replace them with one blu-ray disc.

If you’re on the hunt for a contemptible Blu-ray drive to experience the high-def movies on, the Lite-on 4x BD-ROM (DH-4O1S) is one of the superlative options available in the market. However, the shortage of burning options — also for CDs — is sure to exasperate with some.

The (DH-4O1S) Lite-on 4X BD-ROM is a read-only Blu-ray ocular drive well suited with, BD-R both dual and single layered, BD-ROM and BD-RE discs. It also lines up playback support for nearly all major DVD formats, along with CD-R and CD-RW. Its major claim to eminence is perhaps its price tag: at $169, it is presently the cheapest Blu-ray drive in the market. It is also amazingly fast, with reading pace that match most of its top-tiered competitors.

In today’s high-tech age of digital proliferation, why would anyone want a read-only optical drive? It seems that, there is still a marketplace for such kind of stuff, as manufacturers keep making them. While we can acknowledge the (DH-4O1S)’s read-only grade when it comes to Blu-ray discs, the need of writing options for standard-definition media is a bit of a drag. It means you will require installing a secondary disc drive for all your burning needs. For customers who favor a bare-bones system, this will be less than ideal.

Let us focus on what the (DH-4O1S) 4X BD-ROM can truly do, rather than things it cannot. The (DH-4O1S) is a Blu ray CD-ROM drive that holds up playback for most DVD, Blu ray Disc, CD, and media; it actually even works with dual layered blu-ray discs, which still have to hit the market. Obviously, the major reason for this drive’s subsistence is to gaze at high-definition Blu-ray movies on your Personal Computer.

besides to the drive itself, the sales pack encompasses a S ATA cable, an additional silver face plate, mounting screws, and Cyber link’s Power DVD software — a movie player that back ups Blu-ray media., the (DH-4O1S) Being a high-definition drive uses a Serial ATA interface instead of IDE. Along with offering a more reliable and faster performance, this also helps to lessen disorder in your computer framework.

Once your drive is plugged in, you will be capable to watch the high-def movies in all their glistening glory. Video quality is naturally exceptional, and the drive itself displayed quick response times when it came to chapter selections, fast-forwarding/ rewinding, and powering up and no freeze-ups, that is always an encouraging mark.

In terms of corporeal operation, the (DH-4O1S) was comparatively quiet.

The (DH-4O1S) 4x BD-ROM delivered remarkable reading speeds across all the supported media. It is twice as speedy at reading the high definition content as Sony’s BDUX10S, which only endow the users with 2X read speeds for Blu-ray discs. Its wonderful 32x CD-RW and CD-R reading speeds are also perceptibly faster as evaluated to 24x from the BDUX10S. DVD reading pace, in the meantime, remains perfectly adequate at 12x in case of the single layer discs and 8x in case of the dual layer/RW/DVD-9. However, he (DH-4O1S) 4x BD-ROM does not support DVD-RAM as the Sony’s BDUX10S does.

You can use any DVD HD to copy the Blu-ray Discs. The earlier blu-ray copy freeware, DVD Fab HD Decrypter, does not supports the newest types of Blu-ray Discs, plus BD+ protected discs. If you want to copy a Blu-ray Disc, you should now use any high definition DVD.

Copy Blu-ray using DVD Fab HD Decrypter

DVD Fab HD Decrypter might still work for copying older Blu-ray movies though it no longer supports copying latest Blu-ray Disc releases.

Fengtao Software Company declared that a newer version that now provides Blu-ray copy function. Now comes the question that at what price can you use this blu ray copy software. Believe it or not the answer is “zero”. Yes, you can use this software for absolutely free by downloading it from net.

Copy Blu-ray using BackupBluray

The first tool released for copying the Blu ray discs. However, it is an open source but still is quite complicated tool to copy the Blu ray discs.
This Backup Blu-ray tool is planned to help support Blu-ray movies. The old version of this functionality only supports the copying of Blu-ray discs with a known CPS unit key. Back up for decryption by means of a Volume Unique key will most probably be added in the near future as the progress continues. At the present, a steady version of the tool is not available up till now for mass distribution. The early tool has proven doing well though, at the same time as there has been one confirmed report of an unbeaten Blu-ray Disc backup.
The foremost Blu-ray Disc movie to be the victim to a support and decryption seems to be Lord of War, produced by Lion’s Gate Films. After getting BD-ROM video files and a memory tip, muslix64 was able to decrypt the content successfully. An effective crypto attack was used to scrutinize the memory dump acquired from a Blu-ray Disc software player like the Win DVD or Power DVD). The crypto attack helped to classify the encryption keys that required for decrypting the video files. After the first experiment was an accomplishment, muslix64 launched the alpha version of Backup Blu-ray.

Copy Blu-ray through IMG Burn

Copying Blu-ray Discs needs the use of two separate parts of software, the first part of software copies the Blu-ray Disc files to the hard drive, the second part of software writes or burns or these files to a recordable Blu-ray Disc .

One of the superlative programs accessible for burning any type of recordable discs is IMG Burn. IMG Burn is a freeware, which actually means that it is very free to download and use. The line up supports burning to an array of media, together with most types of recordable DVD’s plus recordable Blu-ray Discs.

Copy Blu-ray using CD Burner XP

CD Burner XP now line up writing to Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD recordable layout. You might be able to use CD Burner XP in place of IMG Burn for writing your Blu-ray backup discs.

Commercial HDTV sets came into existence in the consumer market in 1998, but there was no universally accepted, low-priced technique to play or record HD content. If truth be told, there was no means with the storage essential to put up HD codecs, except for Digital VHS from JVC and HDCAM from Sony. However, it was illustrious that using lasers with comparatively shorter wavelengths would make optical storage possible with higher density. The practical blue laser diode was invented by Shuji Nakamura; it was a big sensation among storage-medium community in the computers, though a extensive patent court case delayed its commercial introduction.

History

Sony began with two projects applying the new diodes: The Ultra Density Optical (UDO), and DVR Blue a set-up of rewritable discs that would ultimately develop into Blu-ray Disc. The base technologies of the formats are similar overall.
The first DVR Blue sample was revealed at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000. On February 19, 2002, the project was formally declared as Blu-ray, and the nine initial members founded Blu-ray Disc burner.
The first customer device was in supplies on April 10, 2003. This gadget was the Sony BDZ-S77, a recorder that was made obtainable only in Japan. The suggested price was US$3800, yet, there was no standard movies or prerecorded video, released for this player. The Blu-ray Disc standard was yet years away, as a newer, more protected Digital Rights Management system was desired before the Hollywood studios would agree to use it. On October 4, 2004, the Blu-ray Disc Founders were authoritatively changed to the Blu-ray Disc Association and 20th Century Fox joined the Board of Directors of this association.

BLU RAY DISC

Blu-ray Disc sometimes termed as “Blu-ray,” is an ocular disc storage means designed to take the place of the customary DVD format. Its major uses are to store PlayStation 3 video games, high-definition video, and other data, with about 25 GB each single layered, and 50 GB each double layered disc. The Blu ray disc has the same substantial dimensions as customary DVDs and CDs.
The given name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read the disc. whilst a standard DVD use a 650 nm red laser, Blu-ray has a shorter wavelength of a 405 nm blue-violet laser, and consent to for roughly six times additional data storage than a regular DVD.
All through the format war on the high-definition optical discs, Blu-ray raced with the HD DVD format. The main company supporting HD DVD Toshiba, surrendered in February 2008, and the thus format war finished; in July 2009, Toshiba declared plans to publicize its own Blu-ray Disc device by the end of 2009.
The Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures, developed Blu-ray Disc. More than 1,500 Blu-ray disc titles are existing in Australia, 1,500 in the United Kingdom, with 2,500 in Japan, and 2,500 in the United States and Canada.

Existing optical disc technology, like the DVDR, DVD and DVD-RAM as well as DVD-RW also use a red laser to be read and written; but Blu-ray disc burners uses a blue-violet laser in its place, that is the reason behind its name Blu Ray.

Undoubtedly, the DVD has played a large role in the industry of entertainment, but its high time now to switch over to Blu ray movies. The movies with high definition providing the best theatre like audio and video experience.

Do you yearn enjoying your favorite movies with high definition or just known as HD? Are you worn-out of waiting for your desired movie on cable or dish? Do you own the precise wide screen HD TV, with just a regular DVD player? Unfortunately, the treat of watching your favorite movies with high definition is not feasible in simple DVD format. Undoubtedly, the DVD has played a large role in the industry of entertainment, but its high time now to switch over to Blu ray movies. The movies with high definition providing the best theatre like audio and video experience.

Blu-ray is competent enough to store and play movies with a resolution of 1080p. 1080p resolution is actually, what we call as a “Full High-Definition” or ” True High-Definition”. A Blu-ray disc can play and store approximately around 5 to 6 hours of true high-definition content that is with resolution of 1080p and about 24 hours of regular standard-definition content, that is with 480i or 480p resolution. Having the potential of hoarding up to 50 gigabytes of data, you certainly would be able to watch a full Blu-ray movie with crisp clarity.

What is 1080p resolution actually?

Well, the figure 1080 denoted the number of lines of vertical resolution, when we say 1080 p that means there are 1080 lines of vertical resolution. Bigger is the quantity of vertical resolution line, sharper, detailed and superior is the picture on the screen. The letter ‘p’ linked with number 1080 denotes the progressive scan. Now you might be thinking what the progressive scan is. Let me tell you it is a technique to transmit, display or store the moving images. Along with the progressive scan there is one more technique to display, transmit or store the moving images and that is termed as the “interlace” which is generally denoted by the letter ‘i’.

Interlace was fashioned to perk up the video quality without using much bandwidth. On the other hand, progression scan (generally denoted as ‘p’) is advanced to the interlaced technique for the reason that the “progression scan technique” stores, transmits, or display moving images by doling out every single horizontal line one after the other in each frame. At the same time the interlace method doll out every other line in one frame, then the remaining lines in the next frame. Thus, the outcome is the narrowed horizontal resolution. It will not be correct to say that interlace technique it absolutely bad and the progressive scan is just perfect, but when the best picture quality is concerned progressive scan technique is the way to go.

Blu-ray movies are made on the Java software platform. The plus point of using Java is that being the most commonly used platform particularly in Internet applications it significantly improves the menu and other software facilities like the ability to revise Blu-ray software over the Internet. The additional contents and menus like the games are thus visually appealing and far more interactive than on DVD.

Optical devices have come a very long way and they are the integral part of consumer market. A decade ago, optical discs drives were very expensive and owning one was not possible. Due to advancements in optical storage technology, the price kept on reducing and the features became better and better. CD ROM drives were the first to hit the market and it became a necessity soon. The optical devices have progressed from read only CD ROM to CD ROM writers. Then a much better contender, the DVD devices and DVD discs hit the screen. These devices were still expensive especially disc writers. Later many more formats came into existence like CD-RW, CD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RE, DVD-R and DVD+R etc. Earlier the drives were format specific, but now the devices support all the formats and are backward compatible. They are called multi format disc drives. The consumer need not bother about the formats any more. The storage capacities and the encoding techniques have increased considerably. HD DVDs and blu-ray discs devices were the next generation drives that made their way on to the marker. Although, HD DVDs became popular, blu-ray discs out beat them in every respect and soon became a new standard for storing high definition videos and Sony PS3 games. The storage capacities of these discs have increased by 10 folds. A blu-ray is equivalent to 10 DVDs i.e it has the storage capacity of 10 DVD discs.
Blu Ray disc refers to an optical media that is capable of storing large amount data, about 10 times more than a DVD. Single layer blu ray disc can hold 25GB of data and dual layer can store 50 GB of data.

Blu Ray disc refers to an optical media that is capable of storing large amount data, about 10 times more than a DVD. Single layer blu ray disc can hold 25GB of data and dual layer can store 50 GB of data. Hence, they are used to store high definition videos, data and play station games. Although the storage capacity of the blu ray disc is very large compared to the DVD/CD, the physical dimensions are same. The difference in size is due to use of different wavelength of laser light. A DVD uses 650 nanometer red laser light and blu ray discs use blue-violet laser light of wavelength 405 nm. Shorter wavelength means more storage space, since the laser can be controlled easily. The name Blu-Ray comes from the blue laser light that is used for reading/writing such discs. Blu ray disc was first developed by Blu-ray disc association. There was competition between Blu Ray disc and HD DVD, but Blu-Ray turned out be a superior media compared to HD DVD.

The Blu ray disc is similar in size with respect to CDs and DVDs, but because of the shorter wavelength, more data can be stored. The spot size on which the laser light will be incident decides the storage capacity of the optical media, which in turn depends on the diffraction and the numerical aperture used to focus the light on the media. It is not easy to focus laser on smaller spots and requires lens that have larger numerical aperture size. In addition, the cover layer should be made thinner to avoid other optical effects, so that light can be focused on the smaller spot. The encoding techniques have also been increased which has aided in increased capacity of the discs.

Unlike DVDs, the data layer of the blu ray discs is closer to the surface, making it vulnerable to damages. There is need to protect the data layer and cartridges were to used to do it. Cartridges made the expensive blu-ray discs more expensive. Later, hard coating of pick-up surface was introduced to prevent damage of the data layer. Custom made hard- coat technologies were introduced by the blu-ray disc manufacturers like Sony, LG, Verbatim etc. These materials had antistatic and scratch resistant properties. Although DVDs are safer compared to Blu-Ray discs, many companies introduced scratch-free coatings for expensive DVD discs.

Blu Ray is popular for storing HD videos and PS3 games. The BD ROM players must support the common codec like MPEG2, SMPTE VC1, and H.264/MPEG-4.The advantage of using blu-ray discs to store multimedia is that large files can fit into one Blu-Ray disc and also high resolution videos can be watched.

In any optical media, the data is stored in a particular form called pits. In a disc burner, laser beams are used to heat the dye present on the disc to form certain pattern which represents digital data – 0s and 1s.The distance between the pits is known as land and it is also known as marks in writable media. In readable media, liquid plastic is used to stamp on the discs through a molding machine and then a coat of protective metallic reflective layer is added over the disc. On the other hand, writable discs are so designed that marks can be created by heating the disc using laser beams at specific points. While the disc spins, the laser beam hits these patterns or marks and the intensity of the beams get modified and reflected back. Then they are converted into electrical signals through and the data is shown on the output device.

The process of creating pattern is not simple. Many assume that zeroes and ones are etched directly as pits and lands, but in reality this does not happen. Both pits and lands represent a series of 0s of varying lengths and the transition between them is treated as one. The patterns are designed such that data can be accurately read as string of pulses. Modulation keeps the strings of 0s in a particular range ( >=2 & <10) and the transition between them is 1. The thickness of a human hair can be equivalent to 150 pits and a small dust particle can clog thousands of pits. But the laser light focuses past the surface and hence these particles won’t affect in any way. Error correction is done in the case of slightly damaged discs and that appear as glitches. Extremely damaged discs cannot be read by the BD player and the error is reported to the computer.

100 GB blu ray discs are being produced and the future for blu ray discs look very bright. Blu-ray discs – the next generation optical media have superseded DVD data format and they are here to stay!
